A simplified grid-based land surface model is proposed to characterize the impact of land use and vegetation types on land surface processes over large river basins. On the basis of land cover data in China, this model is used to simulate evapotranspiration and surface runoff generation on different land use and vegetation types in the Liao River basin, with an area of more than 220, 000 km2.Crop evapotranspiration is fully represented over the basin. The land cover data in China, published by Chinese Academy of Sciences, provides a relative high quality land use and land cover data for China. It may improve and facilitate the characterizing of land surface processes in China. This model is used in the Liao River basin during 1995-2001 and evaporation, surface runoff and soil moisture data are used to assess the model performance.Spatial distribution of actual evapotranspiration, runoff depth and soil moisture in the Liao River basin are also mapped. Results show that the model can represent surface evapotranspiration and runoff well.Nevertheless, further investigation should be performed at other river basins to validate the availability of the model.
