Wave Energy is the perfect choice for distributed generation of electricity on a community scale. After all, a large majority of the worlds population lives near reasonably energetic seas. The distributed generation of renewable wave energy has many advantages over centralized generation, and wave energy converters do not occupy precious land like solar or wind energy converters. Not only do you save on the cost of grid infrastructure but also each community becomes responsible for the operations and maintenance of their wave energy resource and for its conversion. Moreover, distributed wave energy generation makes cheap and renewable energy immediately available to more isolated communities which are beyond the reach of the high voltage grid.If a large amount of energy is needed at a given location, for example at a major city, the Wave Energy Park hosting the wave machines can become correspondingly large, similarly to what happens for offshore wind. With respect to offshore wind, the advantages of offshore wave energy conversion are a lower final cost of electricity and a much lower environmental and visual impact. At least initially, offshore wave energy can even coexist with offshore wind in the same sea area, to optimize the utilization of the export cable.
