A culture-dependent approach[1].was applied to investigate the Gram-positive bacteria associated with the Antarctic sponges Rossella nuda, Rossella racovitzae, Hexactinellida, and Myxilla mollis, Homaxinella sp., Radiella antarctica, all Dernospongiae[2].In total, 46 gram-positive strains were cultured.Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 24 isolates were affiliated to Actinobacteria,including five genera Streptomyces, Nocardiopsis, Psendonocar dia, Nocardia, Dietzia and Brevibacterium.The other 22 isolates were affiliated with the Firmicutes and among them six may be new species based on the sharing of 94-100% 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with previously uncultured bacterium clones.
