HIV and SIV pathogenic infection is characterized by early CD4+ T cell dysfunction.Using a protocol of optimized in vitro anti-CD3/28 mediated expansion of enriched CD4+ T cells, we have been able to induce long-term control of viremia in rhesus macaques chronically infected with SIVmac239.Even though adoptively transferred in vitro expanded cells were susceptible to infection, viral replication appeared markedly inhibited compared to non expanded cells.
