A series of iron-based composite coatings were fabricated by using plasma transferred arc weld surfacing process with externally longitudinal magnetic field.The microstructure,microhardness of these coatings were characterized by using optical micrograph (OM),scanning electron micrograph (SEM),energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS),X-ray diffraction (XRD),Rockwell microhardness tester.The wear resistance of the coatings was evaluated by using wet sand rubber wheel abrasion tester.Experimental results showed that,when the magnetic filed was not applied,the strip-like and hexagonal-like (Fe,Cr)7C3 carbides with a small volume fraction were non-uniformly distributed in the coatings.However,when the magnetic filed was applied,the microstructure of the coating was mainly Y-Fe as the matrix which was reinforced by strip-like or hexagonal-like (Fe,Cr)7C3 and Cr7C3 carbides.
