The fatigue characteristics of asphalt mixes are usually expressed as relationships among the initial tensile stress or strain, the initial stiffness and the number of load repetitions to failure. To better understand the effect of temperature and frequency on fatigue characteristics of asphalt mixes,or in other words,on the above experimentally determined parameters and initial stiffness modulus of the asphalt mixture,a laboratory testing program is conducted in this research. The test results indicate that the effect of temperature and frequency on sensibility of fatigue life to strain level is not significant. The stiffness increases with the increase of frequency and the decrease of temperature. The pavement fatigue life of asphalt mixes is greatly affected by the temperature:the AC layer becomes more resistant to fatigue distress as the temperature increases.Higher frequency results in higher material stiffness and, therefore,in higher stress levels and shorter fatigue lives under the strain-controlled test. The fatigue characteristics of asphalt mixes could be better expounded with temperature and frequency instead of stiffness.
