The fluid dynamics of floating particles and the forces that lead to self-assembly are analyzed. We discuss the observation, neglected in the literature, that particles sprinkled onto a free surface firrst undergoes a violent dispersive phase before reversal to attraction and self-assembly.Colloidal particles undergo dispersion and do not self-assemble.A mathematical theory for dispersion is derived and in good agreement with observations.
