A promising core-shell structure low-Pt catalyst,PdPt@Pt/SCNTs,with shortened carbon nanotubes as support and extra-high performance toward methanol anodic oxidation, has been prepared by a novel two-step high pressure colloidal approach,in which the acetone was used as solvent and ethylene glycol was used as reductant. The shortened carbon nanotubes (ca.200 nm) were obtained by ball milling carbon nantubes (5-10um) with ethanol as the milling aid agent. And PtPd but not pure Pd was used as core for prevention of aggression of pure Pd and obtaining better dispersion. The catalyst showed excellent activity to the anodic oxidation of methanol, its activity is 2.87 times higher than that of commercial Johnson Matthey 40 wt% Pt/C catalyst; and it is very interesting that the ratio of forward current If to backward current Ib is high up to 1.41 for the oxidation of methanol, meanwhile the ratio of Pt/C catalyst is only ca.0.74,indicating that the PdPt@Pt/SCNTs catalyst have excellent activity to the oxidation of intermediate of methanol and good tolerance toward methanol. The PdPt@Pt/SCNTs catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
