Voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) are crucial for numerous physiological processes.Their activity is tightly regulated by diverse signaling molecules and pathways, including calcium, calmodulin, G proteins, phosphorylation, and lipids.We have uncovered a novel form of homeostatic regulation of neuronal L-type VGCCs:the core of the pore-forming alpha 1 subunit is proteolytically cleaved at multiple sites,possibly in the Ⅰ-Ⅱ, Ⅱ-Ⅲ, and Ⅲ-Ⅳ intracellular linkers that connect the four homologous internal repeats.
