The evidences of Antarctic phytoplankton responding to ENSO provide important insights into climate change-drived marine ecosystem shift.Field measured and remote sensing data and sedimentary biomarker records from Prydz Bay have been analyzed to explore relationships between phytoplankton and ENSO.Community change of field measured phytoplankton showed significant El Ni(n)o/La Ni(n)a-related succession during 1990-2003.Synchronously, algae species decreased evidently than normal years.Monthly variation of remote sensing chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface tempreture (SST) indicated ENSO impacted the time of phytoplankton blooming distinctly during 2008-2011.Phytoplankton blooming (indicated by Chl-a) was ahead of SST elevating during El Ni(n)o, while lagged behind of SST elevating during La Ni(n)a.Stratigraphic record of lipid biomarkers infered proportion of different algaes alterd significantly between El Ni(n)o and La Ni(n)a.Relative proportion increased for diatoms and decreased for dinoflagellates during El Ni(n)o, while it reduced for diatoms and evelated for dinoflagellates during La Ni(n)a.
