Herbal drug mixtures usually contain hundreds of compounds.Some compounds exist in high concentration as major components and others exist in very low concentration as minor components.In most situations, the minor components are bioactive.It is a challenge to determine the chemical and biological properties of all the components in the complex herbal mixtures.In this study, we have successfully developed a novel high-throughput human cell-based steroid-hormone receptor-driven reporter gene bioassay to determine summated bioactivities of the herbal drugs extracts and theft purified fractions.Combining with the bioassay, liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) has been used as a high resolution and high sensitivity technique of simultaneous separation, identification and quantification for both minor and major compounds in herbal drugs.
