Objective Cytokines are thought to be prominent in driving the progression of inammatory and fibrotic responses during radiation-induced lung injury (RILI).Most of these cytokines are associated with T-helper-1 (Th1) or T-helper-2 (Th2) cytokines.IFN-γ, a classic Th1 cytokine, is associated with acute inflammatory reactions and is controlled by T-bet.IL-13 is a classic Th2 cytokine regarded as a strong inducer of tissue fibrosis and is regulated by GATA-3.Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and arginase-1 (Arg-1), the hallmarks of classically-activated macrophages (caMΦ) and alternatively-activated macrophages (aMΦ) induced by Th1 and Th2 cytokines,and play roles in pro-inflammation and fibrosis, respectively.The purpose of this study is to determine if RILI is associated with the differential activation of Th1/Th2 immune responses.
