The cell-surface carbohydrates play significant roles in a diverse set of biological processes, particularly, viral infection. The initial step of viral entry is through the interaction of viral envelope proteins with the sugars on the host cell surface. The sialyl trisaccharide(SA 2,6Gal 1,4GlcNHAc) is responsible for binding with influenza virus, whereas heparan sulfate is an receptor for herpes simplex virus and dengue virus. The synthesis of influenza virus-binding trisaccharide and heparan sulfate oligosaccharides as potential anti-viral drugs will be presented here.
