Infection with Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is the main cause of genital herpes,and affects millions worldwide.In non-high-risk adult populations in the USA and Europe,seroprevalence rates are about 20-25% and 4-20% respectively.Higher HSV-2 seroprevalence rAtes (35-40%) have been recorded in similar populations in Brazil,Costa Rica and Thailand.In developing countries,and particularly in Africa,we and others have clearly demonstrated that high incidence and prevalence (>60%) of HSV-2 infection,and its synergistic interactions with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection,are cause for concern.Indeed,we consistently reported a significant correlation between the HIV shedding and HSV-2 shedding in highly exposed African women living in Central Africa,as well as the presence of HSV-2 neutralizing antibodies in this population.
