The multifactor causes of childhood obesity are complex and most of research is focused in finding medical factors that can enable future treatment.Health professionals have a lot of knowledge about why obese patients become obese but there seems to be a need for treatment models that can be useful in practical clinical settings.Family-based solutionfocused interventions have shown positive effects in treatment of childhood obesity for implementing and maintaining life-style changes. It is important to start with prevention as early as possible for several reasons.Once obese children pass through puberty without treatment, they invariably become obese adults.Another important factor to take into consideration is that children are dependent on their parents knowledge and everyday habits and do not have the possibility of changing unhealthy lifestyle by themselves.Parents need support and education in order to understand that they already are doing plenty of things that are working. Some obese families have attempted too many changes in a short period of time and subsequently failed. The treatment goals for prevention of childhood obesity should not be too loose weight in a short time.Rather, the aim should be to slow or halt weight gain, so that the child or adolescent will grow into their own body weight.Patients are empowered when they have knowledge, skills, attitude and selfawareness necessary to influence their own behavior to improve quality of their lives. The solution-focused systemic approach, based on respect and collaboration with the patient and the family, concentrates on success, exceptions and solutions. It is more helpful to develop goals together with the patient and their family rather than imposing ideas and assumptions about what the obese child and their family need to do.The quality of clients participation in treatment stands out as the most important determinant of outcome.Health professionals need to be more open to practicing interviewing skills that give patients information they find helpful and give them own ideas about what they need to change in their life style.Health professionals also need to explain medical information in terms of single, small concrete steps and realistic goals. It does not help if the doctor, nurse or the psychologist is experts if the child or their family with obese problems do not understand or feel included in the treatment.By involving the family as a partner in decision-and goal-setting process we focus on existing resources and give the patient and their family members a since of control of their own lives and locus of control.
