It is very important for both the utility and the customers to find the flicker source in order to keep the level of flicker in the network as low as possible,before the flicker propagates widely in the network.The purpose of this paper is to describe a new direction determining method to a flicker source in power distribution systems.The proposed method allows us to detect voltage flicker and locate flicker source from upstream or downstream when measurement transients are present in the recorded data from installations.S-transform is applied for signal processing first to extract the features of voltage fluctuation and get the instantaneous voltage and current vector.Then,with the latter,tracking of impedance parameters are realized during the voltage fluctuation.Finally,by analyzing the relationship between voltage fluctuation and the change of system impedance parameters from upstream and load parameters from downstream,the criterion for determining the direction to a flicker source is established.The methods have been validated by a simulation in power distribution systems.
