In recent years, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) have been increasingly considered as a single disease, namely, venous thromboembolism (VTE).The initial treatment of DVT includes the prevention of thrombus propagation and development of PE, and minimizing the likely food of recurrence.Prompt diagnosis of VTE is mandatory, but only 25% of suspected cases are confirmed by objective testing. In this background, the D-dimer testing with high negative predictive value represents anexcellent triage test in patients with suspected VTE.
