Ultra-high temperature ceramic(UHTC)materials are required for future hypersonic vehicle applications.It is widely accepted in the UHTC community that the major disadvantages with monolithic UHTCs are their poor defect tolerance and thermal shock resistance.In order to overcome this and to meet the oxidation resistance at extreme temperatures,UHTC composites are prepared using carbon fiber(Cf)preforms and a variety of UHTC powder combinations via a slurry impregnation route.
