β/γ-crystallins are the major structural proteins in mammalian lens, while β-crystallins exist as homomers or heteromers containing 2~8 subunits. The unique long N-terminal extension of βB 1-crystallin is generally truncated to various extent, which has been associated to the regulation of the size distribution of β-crystallin assemblies in human lens.
