Identifying non-neoplastic cell populations in cancer hosts and investigating the roles of these cells in cancer progression, especially regarding their interaction with cancer cells, has become increasingly critical to understanding cancer as a systemic disease and finding more effective treatment options.Here, we report a new population of erythrocytic-lineage Ter119+CD45-CD71+CD44+ small cells in the spleen of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-bearing mice.These cells produce the neurotrophic factor artemin at high level.I Furthermore, we also found Ter-cells in the spleen of HCC patients.In HCC patients, we found that serum level of artemin is significantly higher and correlates with poorer prognosis.In vivo administration of neutralizing antibody against artemin or silencing of artemin receptor GFRα3 in cancer cells significantly prolonged survival of HCC-bearing nude mice.So, Ter-cells promote HCC progression via artemin production, and serum artemin may be a new prognosis predictor and therapeutic target for HCC patients.
