The nucleation behavior of liquid Al and Al alloys on single crystal substrates with different termination planes was systematically investigated under controlled nucleation process. In the non-reactive metal-oxides system, the measured undercooling of liquid on various Al2O3 substrates proves that the nucleation was affected by the lattice misfit between nucleated phase and substrate.Combining XRD patterns of nucleated phase and high resolution transmission electron microscope analysis on the nucleation interface, the varied interface configurations in Al/Al2O3 systems were controlled by lattice misfit. The interface structure across a large misfit range from 3.2%~25.0% exhibits various features, composing of edge dislocations, coincidence dislocations and stacking faults.
