The growing literature on the semiotics of tourism tends to share Danns view that there is a single language of tourism,usually identified with promotional narratives.This paper presents a qualified and critical use of Danns methodology to study the visions of Yunnan offered by three main Chinese travel magazines.The structure of their iconic analysis and of their representation of local communities leads to the conclusion that a more nuanced and subtle understanding of the languages of tourism should replace the limitations of current conventional wisdom.
