In order to explore a new method for treatment of drug addiction,we developed a device and an implant procedure for chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) in rat.The device mainly consisted of an implantable pulse generator (IPG),a bipolar DBS electrode and an external programmer.It was used for evaluation of the effect of the deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the rat nucleus accumbens (NAc) on morphine addiction.We examined the effects of high frequency stimulation (HFS) on morphine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP).The DBS electrode was stereotaxically implanted into the core of unilateral nucleus accumbens and connected to the stimulator.Then they were fixed to the rat skull with dental cement.One week later,the rats were administrated morphine hydrochloride intraperitoneally (i.p.) every day till craving for morphine occurred.Meanwhile,the rats in DBS group were administrated the high frequency stimulation.
