Intact silica aerogel/sepiolite fiber composites were prepared via a sol-gel technique by using wheat husk ash (WHA) as precursor and sepiolite fibers with different length as reinforcing agents. The composites were dried under ambient pressure after surface modification with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS).The addition of long sepiolite fibers facilitates the formation of intact composites rather than silica aerogel fragments.A considerably low thermal conductivity of 0.012 W/(m·K) is retained for the composites despite their porosity is reduced by the incorporation of sepiolite fibers.
