  While use of first-principles process modeling and simulation technology is key to achieving science-based, mechanistic understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and to succeeding in Quality by Design (QbD), the scientific foundation of process modeling and simulation technology is the molecular thermodynamic models that provide thermodynamically consistent descriptions of thermophysical properties and phase behavior of simulated chemical systems.
