Glypican-3 (GPC3) is a membrane-bound heparan sulfate proteoglycan that functions in embryonic cell growth and differentiation which is highly expressed in the placenta.GPC3 is mutated in Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome, which is characterized by tissue overgrowth and an increased risk of embryonal malignancies.We have studied the expression patterns of GPC3 in a wide range of human tissues: fetal and adult, malignant and benign.We concluded that GPC3 expressed in defined fetal organs such as the kidney, liver, and testis, but the GPC3 expression was shut down at adult tissues until malignant tumors develop in these organs.Similar to alpha fetal protein, which is currently used widely as a diagnostic marker liver cancer and testicular caner, GPC3 is more sensitive with a wider spectrum as a cancer marker.
