  Skin corrosion is defined as the production of irreversible tissue damage in the skin following the application of a test substance (OECD, 2002).According to current regulatory requirements, assessment of skin corrosion is mandatory for all chemicals placed on the market (EC, 2006).The SkinEthicTM Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE) test method has been formally validated by the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC)for distinguishing between corrosive and non-corrosive chemicals (ESAC, 2006).In particular, the SkinEthicTM RhE in vitro test method was shown to meet the performance and reproducibility standards as defined in the OECD TG 431, and can therefore be used for routine regulatory skin corrosion testing.
