The fungi in giant panda gut, compost, soil, and fresh water were investigated, and a high and interesting biodiversity of anaerobic, thermophilic, oligotrophic and freshwater fungi were discovered.Currently, 1293 strains of 19 fungal species have been isolated from 21 giant panda feces samples.Most of them are therTnophilic or thermotolerant fungi with certain cellulose degradation abilities.One new genus was proposed.The clone libraries showed that there are anaerobic fungi in the gut of giant panda, and some of them may represent new taxa.The comprehensive analysis of fungal diversity in the gut of giant panda by 454 sequencing is in progress.For the thermophilic fungi, 365 strains have been isolated from 170 samples collected in China.At present, a world monograph of thermophilic fungi is being prepared.
