  An awned rice(Oryza sativa)plant carrying an extra chromosome was discovered among the progenies of triploid Zhongxian 3037 plants.The transmission frequency of the extra chromosome to the next generation was unstable,and the effect of an extra chromosome on plant traits was cumulative.Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that this extra chromosome was a ring chromosome derived from the long arm of chromosome 4,and only the centromeric probe Centromeric Retrotransposon of Rice(CRR)co-localized with the centromere-specific histone CENH3.The extra ring chromosome exhibited a unique segregation pattern during meiosis,including no pairing between the ring chromosome and normal chromosome 4 at pachytene and preseparation of sister chromatids during meiosis I.These finding suggest that the lack of chiasmata in univalent ring chromosomes promotes bi-orientation and pre-segregation of sister chromatids during meiosis I.
