In plant-pathogen interactions, the apoplastic space represents a complex battlefield involving many kinds of interactions which play an important role in determining the overall outcome of infection. Here, we identified a participant in this battlefield, the GH12 glycosyl hydrolase XEG1,which acts as a key virulence determinant of Phytophthora sojae but is at the same time recognized as a PAMP by the host plant soybean.XEG1, produced by the soybean pathogen P.sojae, exhibits xyloglucanase and b-glucanase activity.
