The traffic organizaiton of contemporary architectural design,due to the large volume of the buildings themselves,exhibit the tendency of complexity,which results in spatial cognitive obstacle and way-losing phenomenon.This phenomenon is common in building complexes especially in commercial complexes and has produced a negative psychological impact on the normal shopping behavior.Being the potential solution of the phenomenon above,the theory of wayfinding started from the 1960s,and was included in the category of environment-behavior science in later studies.The generalized wayfinding process comprise three stages—spatial cognition establishing,decision making and decision executing—in studies of Romedi Passini (Romedi Passini,1984)3.The stage of information processing contains the perception and cognition on environment information which provides the precondition of the last two stages—decision making and decision executing (Tawfiq M.Abu-Ghazzeh,1996)4.Based on the studies above,our study attempts to correlate the unique of commercial buildings.As a result,wayfinding behavior in commercial buildings can be decomposed into four stages—spatial perception,spatial cognition,decision making and optimization,which together form the framework of our study aiming at summarizing wayfinding behavior and performance.Dalian Heping Square was selected as the spatial carrier for our study,and questionnaire for the method.By analyzing characteristics of wayfinding behavior,so that the commercial building designs will be provided with the basis on environment-behavior science.
