Hybrid sterility is a major form of postzygotic reproductive isolation between the species and subspecies in Oryza genus.A number of gene loci are involved in hybrid sterility in rice.So far, the cloning of several hybrid sterility genes have been reported, including S5 (Chen et al., 2008, Yang et al., 2012), SaF/SaM (Long et al., 2008), S27/S28 CYamagata et al., 2010) and DPL1/DPL2 (Mizuta et al., 2010).Three closely linked genes in S5 locus interact to control the female sterility of the indica-japonica hybrids of the Asia cultivated rice, while nucleotide variations in these genes produced three incompatible (S5-i, S5-j) and compatible (S5-n) alleles.
