Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), either secreted from neural stem cells that were grafted into the injured rat brains in vivo or given directly to injured neurons in vitro, effectively reduced traumatic axonal injury and may be responsible for the cell transplantation-mediated inprovement of cognitive function.Specifically, GDNF protects axons/neurites via balancing the activity of calcineurin, and promotes axonal outgrowth by reducing the abnormal expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and actin aggregation in neurons via blocking Rho signals.
