Ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) is the origin of epithelial ovarian tumours.During the transformation to tumour, OSE loses its mesenchymal and acquires epithelial characteristics. This transformation involves in de novo or increased expression of both tight junction (T J) and adherens junction (A J) proteins i.e.E-cadherin, claudin-3 and claudin-4 during ovarian tumour progression. One growth factor involved in the regulation of TJ formation in both normal and transformed epithelial cells is the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1).
