The United States government views plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) as an important technology for enabling deep cut in its petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and for maintaining its leadership in automotive manufacturing. In 2011, the US Administration announced the goal of 1 million PEVs on the road by 2015.The US automotive industry has announced a total cumulative production capacity of over 1.2 million PEVs for the same timeframe. What has not been well understood and yet probably the most critical factor in determining the actual economic and environmental impact of the technology is the market acceptance of PEV.The market prospect of PEV in the US and the associated causes of uncertainty are the subject of this study. The Market Acceptance of Advanced Automotive Technologies (MA3T) is used to simulate the relationship between the sales of PEV and various factors, including technology cost, energy prices, infrastructure provision, consumer preference and policies.
