As the material evidence of the ancient civilization, heritage buildings record the development history of a countrys policy, economy and culture. They possess undeniable persuasiveness and incontestable authenticity. Therefore,it has become an imminent global problem that how to apply advanced technologies and methods to the documentation of the historical information of heritage buildings, which could provide sufficient and accurate data for the monitoring, preservation and restoration of ancient buildings.Taking the Tower of Buddhist Incense in the Summer Palace for example, this paper uses the laser scanning and closerange photogrammetry technologies to comprehensively record the current state of the tower with high precision. The point clouds mosaic of the whole tower has been completed, and the towers main columns and the hypostyle columns were described by ellipse fitting algorithm, based on which the inclination direction and angle of all the columns could be calculated out,and provide scientific data for ancient building protection. In addition, this paper build the 3D model of the tower based on the point cloud data, which records the detailed attribute information of the tower and its components. Finally,a comprehensive database for the 3D models, photos and other historical information has been built up,which contributes to the recording of many types of cultural relic data and its structure information, and finally helps to realize the scientific,high-accurate,permanent preservation of important cultural heritage resources.
