Interaction Design is a relatively new area of practice and study in both China and abroad. With new curriculums, programs, classes and workshops dedicated to interaction design, Chinese universities provide a solid foundation of knowledge in this emerging discipline. However, to increase the value and impact of interaction designers in the workplace, interaction design education needs to go beyond the theories, methodologies and tools of the discipline.Design practitioners and educators need to identify and understand the desired attributes, characteristics, and behaviors of interaction designers required to best leverage this body of knowledge.Discussions with interaction design practitioners, educators, and students;observation and participation in academic and industry projects;subjects in universities;and workshops at conferences were conducted to identify at least six attributes, characteristics and behaviors. These qualities are knowledgeable, perspective, empathy, reframe, synthesis, and reflection.By understanding the nature of who interaction designers are and what they do can help practitioners understand how the body of interaction design knowledge works together, how it is applied, how it creates impact, and what the practice should look like. For educators, understanding this information is the first step in devising teaching and learning activities to educate the designers of tomorrow.
