Solvent has been considered a necessity in chemical reactions since the days of Aristotle.Even today it isbelieved that reactions conducted in solution are faster, more efficient and show greater reproducibility thanthose in the solid state.Because of this, chemists have been trained to use solution phase chemistry in organicsynthesis to such an extent that solvent-free chemistry is not considered. However, due to increasing interestin environmental protection and waste minimization,solvent-free chemistry has recently gained momentum.Mechanochemistry has been demonstrated to be equally fast, efficient and as reproducible as solution phasechemical reactions. In addition to having a large impact on the overall reduction of solvent waste,we have foundthat mechanochemistry can be used to develop recyclable reactions conditions.Through the use of cross linkedpolymers and various reaction vial materials,we have developed novel reaction conditions that allow for therecycling of expensive reagents. We will demonstrate the development of various recyclable reaction conditionsunder mechanochemical conditions. We will also uncover some of the mysteries of mechanochemistry, wheresome chemical reactions are the same as in solution and some quite different.
