Civil engineering is the critical foundation of society, contributing significantly to the development of human progress and civilization with consuming massive resources and energy.Sustainable civil infrastructures are one of the important approaches to realize sustainable development of human society.Sustainable civil infrastructures can be realized through utilization of high performance materials, novel structural systems, and analytical and design philosophy.Several scientific issues and technology approaches to realize sustainable civil infrastructure are recognized in the paper, including structural material, functional material, sustainable structural system, analysis and design theory, and the quantitative assessment index of structural sustainability.
