High continuous casting ratio and high product quality is the basis for rapid recovery of equipment investment. Siemens VAI developed a number of technical solutions to this end. Advanced cooling system to ensure a comprehensive and flexible production and stable product quality. The Siemens VAI Dynacs 3D cooling model with 3DSprays dynamic spray width adjustment automatically positions the nozzle through a position-controlled hydraulic cylinder, optimizing the water distribution along the width of the casting stream, avoiding over-cooling of the slab corners. Casting thicker slabs using conventional arc caster is another market trend. Siemens VAI commissioned Qinhuangdao Shouqin Caster in June 2010, answering this market demand. This is the first arc-shaped caster in the world to produce 400 mm thick slabs using straight crystallizers. Since the final solidification of the strand takes place after the straightening zone, the production capacity is much higher than that of caster with solid-state straightening, which gives a distinct advantage in terms of production costs. After that, Siemens VAI inaugurated a dual-flow super-thick slab caster with a thickness of 400 mm at Pohang Plant in Pohang, South Korea in March 2011. The design of the caster follows the concept of Connect & Cast, ensuring that all equipment features and models are fully functional at the start of production. As a result, high production rates have become a hallmark of Siemens VAI caster. This article describes the successful application of the advanced process package from Siemens VAI in the Asian Slab Caster and the benefits it receives.
