Gastrointestinal (GI) injury is a major side effect of radiotherapy targeting the abdomen and the predominant tissue damage leading to acute post-radiation death (also known as GI death that occurs within 7-10 days of exposure) in the event of a nuclear incident.Whether GI injury is the direct cause of acute radiation morbidity and mortality, however, has not been settled.Works from our laboratory using a mouse abdominal irradiation (AI) model demonstrate that abscopal suppression of bone and bone marrow cells, mediated by signals responsive to radiation GI injury, is the direct cause of acute morbidity and mortality after AI.
