In this research-expository lecture we consider variational problems defined by Lagrange functions.Although a general solution is known (the classical Helmholtz conditions),many aspects of the problem for more dimensions,higher order of derivatives,and more complicated underlying structures than Euclidean spaces,still belong to fundamental research in variational geometry Our aim in this lecture is threefold: (a)To present a closed theory of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for systems of second-order ordinary differential equations.
