Untranslated regions (UTRs) of influenza virus are considered to possess plural functions, composed ofpolyadenylation and signals for genomic packaging and RNA synthesis. There are 13 nt at the 5 end and 12 nt at the 3 end which are highly conserved.Within the conserved sequences, there is single, natural sequence variation at position 4 from the 3 terminus (this position contains either a U or C).We want to determine the effect on the RNA polymerase and viral replication of the 4th nucleotide substitution at the 3 end UTR of H5N1 influenza virus.
