In recent years, research on conjugated polymers and carbon materials has progressively converged. Various examples can be quoted to emphasize this statement. For example, conjugated polymers can be nowadays prepared in 2-dimensions, forming ordered, layered structures, thus resembling the structures of graphite.[1] Furthermore, conjugated polymer networks with extremely high surface areas, comparable to activated carbons, can be synthesized.[2] On the other hand, graphene and other carbon nanostructures are nowadays often prepared in a controlled manner using typical polymerization techniques, e.g. by polymerizing specially designed molecules on surfaces or in confinements.
