Once regarded as a cousin of pines, yews, and cypresses, it is now clear that ginkgo has no close living relatives.It was first distinguished from conifers in plant classifications of the early nineteenth century and the evidence that has come to light since—particularly the discovery that the details of its reproduction are more like those of a fern than those of a normal seed plant—has reinforced its isolated position among living plants.
