Densified cement systems were developed in the early 1980s, about three decades past. The research led to historical developments in cement and concrete research, forming the baseline for the design of modern cement systems, the so-called high-performance and ultra-high performance concrete.Cement production comprehends one of the relevant carbon emission footprints in the world. The substitution of cement by supplementary cementitious additions encompasses several other health hazards, risks and also technical difficulties such as limited or incoherent pozzolanic activity.Superabsorbent polymers can be used as a "clean technology" in the production of cement-based materials for structural applications with a low carbon footprint. This paper describes the principles of this concept coupled with experimental results on the basic properties of this enhanced type of cement-based materials with combined dense solid skeleton and yet low carbon cement technology.
