China is located in the East Asian monsoon domain; variations in the meteorological conditions associated with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) can influence transport and chemical reactions of O3 over China. We apply a global three-dimensional Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) driven by NASA/GEOS-4 assimilated meteorological fields to quantify the impacts of the East Asian summer monsoon on interannual variations of summertime surface-layer O3 concentrations over China. We find that the simulated O3 concentrations averaged over 1986-2006 are high in northern China and western China (50-70 ppbv) and low in southern China (25-50 ppbv).
