  Objective: To study the adaptive plasticity of the visual and auditory cortices of early monocular blind macaques using blood oxygenation level dependent function MRI(BOLD-fMRI).Materials and methods: Four healthy neonatal macaques(postnatal day 7)were randomly divided into 2 groups(group A and group B).The two macaques in group A were kept as a control group.Optic nerve transection was performed in the right eye of the two macaques in group B to establish the monocular blind model.Sixteen and thirty-two months after the operation,each macaque in groups A and B underwent BOLD-fMRI scanning under two auditory stimuli(pure tones and the sounds of birds).The changes in the activation volumes of the bilateral visual,auditory,frontal and parietal cortices between the two groups under the two types of auditory stimuli were compared.The BOLD response changes in both the visual and auditory cortices of monocular blind macaques were further compared using immunofluorescent staining.Results: Under the two types of auditory stimuli,the bilateral visual cortices of the macaques in group B were significantly activated compared with those in group A,and this was particularly obviously in the left visual cortex.These findings were consistent with the immunofluorescence staining finding of an increased number of c-Fos positive cells in the visual cortices of group B.However,the activation volumes of the bilateral auditory cortices in group B decreased,and they decreased more significantly in the left auditory cortex during the two types of auditory stimuli,which was confirmed by the decreased number of c-Fos positive cells in the auditory cortices of group B.In addition,the frontal and parietal cortices of the macaques in group B were also activated under the two types of auditory stimuli.Conclusions: Cross-modal plasticity for the visual and auditory cortices was established in the monocular blind macaques,and it was more obvious in the left visual cortices than the right ones.This finding could be confirmed by immunofluorescent staining.
