  Preliminary results of the composition and surface activity of surfactants obtained from sea surface microlayer (SSM) samples collected in the Blyth Estuary and an offshore station in the North Sea are presented.The purpose of this work is to build-up a library of surfactant distributions from a variety of locations with different environmental conditions.Sampling over a number of months allowed assessment of seasonal and weather dependant SSM variability whilst allowing evaluation of the sampling and analysis methods.SSM and subsurface samples were collected weekly from Blyth Estuary and monthly from the North Sea prior to analysis on the same day.Surfactant activities were determined using AC voltammetry; at the same time,the dominant types of surface active substances were determined using o-nitrophenol as an electrochemical probe.Dissolved and particulate lipid classes were also determined using Chromarod thin-layer chromatography with a flame ionisation detector.Data from this work will be presented with a view to increasing our understanding of the composition of the SSM and its role in air-sea gas exchange.
