Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute phase protein whose blood levels are elevated to a 1000-fold in response to various inflammatory stimuli including infection, tissue injury and neoplasia.SAA is the precursor protein in AA-type Amyloidosis and is an HDL-associated apolipoprotein playing a role in cholesterol metabolism and transport.Several activities of SAA were described in relevance to inflammation including inducing adhesion, migration and tissue infiltration of inflammatory cells, enhancing expression of inflammatory mediators, IL-lbeta, IL-6, TNF-alpha, IL-8 and COX-2, stimulating activation of transcription factor NF-kappaB and of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling pathways, enhancing activity of matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) and stimulating angiogenesis.
